The candidates for the second round have been announced

(sh) The first selection test of this year's Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition for oboe and trombone ended on Sunday, 5 May 2024. Of the 94 musicians who travelled to Markneukirchen, 36 passed the first hurdle and qualified for the second round of the competition over the last three days. On Monday and Tuesday, 18 participants in each subject will once again demonstrate their skills to the international juries.
For their programme of up to 35 minutes, the oboists can choose from several compulsory pieces, including music written by Christian Frederik Barth and Gustav Schreck as well as Hans Gál, Antal Doráti and Nikos Skalkottas. In addition, all participants in the second round will perform the commissioned composition for the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition Point of no return by Bernd Franke.
In addition to the commissioned composition by Nils Wogram Posaunenmangel for solo trombone, works by Paul Hindemith, Frank Martin, Bernhard Krol and Michael Haydn will also be performed as part of a programme lasting up to 30 minutes.
The competition is open to the public and begins on Monday at 9.00 a.m. in the oboe category in the Markneukirchen Music Hall and for all trombonists at 10.00 a.m. in the Altes Schloß in Erlbach.

The second round will continue in both subjects on Tuesday. The results will then be announced for oboe at 1.00 pm in the music hall and for trombone at 4.00 pm in the Old Castle.
The candidates who successfully passed the first selection test come from 17 different countries, including 8 from South Korea, 6 from Portugal, 5 from Poland, 4 from Germany and one participant each from China, France, Hong Kong, Iran, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Ukraine and Hungary. The age of the participants in the second selection test ranges from 14 to 30 years.
