58th Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition 2023

The 58th Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition of 2023 invites applications in the categories violoncello and double bass

  • The competition is open to the public.
  • The competition will take place in Markneukirchen (Vogtland), State of Saxony, Germany from 4 May 2023 to 13 May 2023.
  •  The Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition is open to young soloists of all nationalities
    • in the category cello born after 1 January 1993
    • in the category double bass born after 1 January 1991
      For participants in double bass who have already been admitted to the 2021 competition, the age limit is January 1, 1989.

 Each competitor must enclose the following documents with his/her application form:
  • a copy of his/her birth certificate or of any other official document showing date of birth
  • a short biography (in English or German)
  • one recent photograph (preferably digital)
  • for the pre-selection a personally recorded audio file (no video, no DVD or similar) in mp3 format. The recording must not have been edited and must not be older than one year. (The works required for the preselection are listed in the repertoire regulations).
  • copies/scans of the scores of the freely chosen work(s) of the third round
  • Confirmation from the bank of payment of the administrative fee (costs associated with registration and the preliminary round) in the amount of € 25.00 to:

The name of the contestant must be indicated on the bank transfer, even if he/she does not pay in himself/herself. The administration fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

The decision of the anonymous preliminary jury on admission to the competition will be communicated no later than 1 March 2023 after the selection has been made. Decisions are final, no explanations will be given. The admitted candidates will receive a written confirmation. They will then transfer the participation fee of € 75.00 immediately and free of charge.  This fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

Application procedure for double bass

Participants must enclose the following documents with the registration form:

  •     a copy of the birth certificate or other official document stating the date of birth.
  •     a short biography (German or English)
  •     a recent photograph (preferably digital)

Applications will be confirmed or rejected by e-mail within 10 days of receipt.

The participation fee of 100.00 euros is to be paid immediately and free of charge for the recipient after confirmation of admission by the competition office to:

Conditions of competition

All information about the competition will be sent personally to the participants. The administration of the competition has the sole right to decide on admission. Each participant will receive a written confirmation of participation in the competition. Participants from abroad may, if necessary, apply for an entry visa immediately with this confirmation.

Recognised pianists will be available to the participants free of charge for the competition. Participants may bring their own accompanists privately and at their own expense; their name and address must be entered on the entry form. These details are binding.

Meals and accommodation costs are to be paid by the participants and piano accompanists themselves. Inexpensive private accommodation and hotels are available (see registration form).

From the second selection examination onwards, the secretariat will pay a daily allowance of € 15.00 to all participants in the competition. Payment will be made in cash personally to the contestant at the Town Hall during the specified opening hours.

Conditions of participation

Each contestant agrees to participate in events during the contest period, if applicable. This will not affect the preparation for and participation in the competition. By registering, each participant confirms that he/she will keep free of all professional obligations or concerts during the duration of the competition and that he/she will be available in Markneukirchen at all times.

The organiser of the competition is entitled to record all events within the scope of the competition acoustically and optically and to use them for the promotion of the competition. Recordings by third parties require the consent of the organiser.

In particular, the organiser reserves the right to authorise radio and television stations to transmit, record and broadcast all competition events. This shall not give rise to any claims for remuneration on the part of the participants in the competition.

The prize-winners undertake to perform in the prize-winners' concert without remuneration.

The competition organisation assumes no liability for the instruments and property of the participants.

By registering, the participant agrees to all conditions including the data protection regulations of the competition.
